SER is more tubular than RER and it does not have ribosomes on the outside, it is separately sealed and found evenly throughout the cell. The SER is dedicated to solely to manufacturing lipids, and sometimes metabolising them. In liver cells for example smooth ER enables glycogen that is stored as granules on the external surface of smooth ER to be broken down to glucose, and contributes to the detox process. Smooth ER is also involved in the production of steroid hormones in different glands throughout the body.
